"If you ever need any money, dear, just ask." said my parents.
I took them at their word. I was doing fine until I sold my house... now I have final bills for the electricity, water and other utilities. So... I asked during my Christmas visit. I felt bad about asking but this offer was extended every week since last August. I took them at their word.
When I asked, I got the money, a lecture and the pointed advice that I should "get a job." I know that their money would not be free but I did not expect the amount of shaming language that would come with it... and the finger shaking. The original offer was so innocent.
Of course it is my own fault. After 45 years in this family, I still occasionally fall for their version of the old "pull my finger" routine.
I learned my lesson. Next time I need money, I will just sell my Christmas gifts on eBay. Their freely given offers of help are too expensive.

Whoa. I didn't hear that part. And uh-huh. Ebay is not notorious for guilt creation...
